When you enter the world of the Scandinavian ensemble Sekten, you´ll encounter a whiff of madness and frail naïvity combined with musical breadth and instrumental mastery. The Swedish lyrics are sung beautifully straight, or unpleasantly threatful. Strong melodic themes are being presented on layers of rhythms and improvisations played with fearless spontaneity.
They have dedicated themselves to redefining traditional relationships between performers and audience members at their live concerts, and while the music is always created using Swedish lyrics and improvised songs/forms, Sekten is known for handing out bells to the audience to use instead of clapping, wearing costumes and disguises, using car headlights as stage lighting, and improvising ballet dance solos. With focus on improvisation, intuition and interaction, this unique band delivers a constantly surprising performance.
Sekten was formed in 2003 and their debut album, Annars är det tyst, was released in 2005, receiving a Danish Music Award for best vocal release. In late 2008, they released their second album, Mäktiga Vingar, once again showing their talent for alternative and intuitive songwriting. KLUBBHUS – a music film by Sofie Tønsberg and Sekten, was released in 2012, exploring their “table music” concept: improvised performances around a dining room table.
Their newest release: Music for Exercise – Headband (2017) is filled with music written and packaged to be listened to while exercising. This is Sekten’s take on how workout music could be, neatly presented via a digital music player inside a golden yellow headband.
All of Sekten´s music is released on the Danish contemporary record label ILK music.
